Fumar no más de España
Leí que el gobierno prohibirán el fumar en lugares públicos como cafeterías, las bares, restaurantes, etc en España al principio de 2011. ¿Tienen (la gente de España) que esto es una buena idea?
I read that the government will ban smoking in public places such as coffee shops, bars, restaurants, etc in spain starting 2011. Do you (people of spain) feel this is a good thing?
Also, in the question above, is "the government" considered a "they" or an "it"? Such as is using "they will prohibit" (prohibirán) correct when referring to the government?

Con respeto a todo el mundo! Dejaré fumando puros, cuando me los forzaron de mi mano muerto y frio!
With respect to everybody! I'll stop smoking cigars when they pry them from my cold dead hands!

Congrats, Birdland! I know it's a hard habit to break. If it weren't just about everyone would have stopped a long time ago. I know that you asked people from Spain how they felt, but as someone who loves to visit Spain I think it's great. This now means that I can eat a meal in Spain and be able to enjoy the total flavor of the wonderful cuisine, and not have it tainted by the smell and taste of cigarettes. Yum!!

Gobierno is singular. I would probably have said va a prohibir instead of prohibirá, but your way sounds grammatically correct to me.
Being a Californian and an ex-smoker, I can say it was controversial when we did it here. It's worked well, though, and now I can't imagine what we used to put up with/allow. Europeans do like their cigarettes, though. I'm curious how this will play out.
I gave up in May. Now it seems strange to me although sometimes I dream I'm smoking a cigar with coffee and cognac and wake up immediately thinking, "but I've given up!"

Here in Scotland smoking in public places was banned in Abil 2006 and everyone thought that the police and the government weren't going to be able to enforce it and that people would just keep on smoking as always. But it's not turned out like that! Now it seems strange that you could smoke in a restaurant.... right next to food, yuck! (And I used to smoke as well!). The only bad thing is if you go out with a group of friends who smoke they'll leave you all on your lonesome every time they nip out to smoke!
The correct way of saying it is 'prohibir fumar' ('prohibirán fumar..'), and what can I say.. I'm not a smoker, so I'm ecstatic about this legislation.
What it doesn't say there is that there is a bitter animosity between the party in the Spanish Government (the Socialist party) and the party that controls the governments of several Autonomous Communities (the conservative PP), including the Community of Madrid. They already tried to do everything in their power to water down previous legislation in this direction in their Communities, so I wouldn't be surprised if they oppose this new legislation, especially if they regain power in 2012, as all polls suggest at the moment.
Non-smokers have the right of breathing non-polluted air? ![]()
no se puede dejar de fumar cuando se quiera.siempre viene la hora cuando te sientes que ya no mas cigarillos
We have a ban on public smoking here in Massachusetts also. It's worked out great for us -- you can eat without breathing in the awful smell of cigarettes. I used to work in an office where almost everyone smoked and it was awful.
