"Widget" is a very informal slang word, for many people. It means "thing," "device," or "part of something." It is used to emphasize that a person doesn't know what a thing is. It may be used for humor, as well.

Ejemplo: I put the widget inside the machine.

Quiere dice: Pongo la cosa por dentro la máquina.

"Widget" can also have the meanings described by Joyce above. However, since I am not a business professional or business student, I don't commonly hear the word used that way.

In general business use, a widget is a business term that describes generic units of production in the manufacturing process. Widgets are often discussed in business school to better describe theories of economics or business theory.

An online dictionary says that there are three definitions:

  1. A small mechanical device or control; a gadget.
  2. An unnamed or hypothetical manufactured article.
  3. a. An element of a GUI, such as a text box or button, that displays information or settings that can be entered or altered by the user. b. A program that performs some simple function, such as providing a weather report or stock quote, and can be accessed from a computer desktop, webpage, mobile phone or subscription television service.
