Do you mean a better word to replace expect in English? - benweck, Nov 27, 2010

I like esperar.

It can be used to hope, to expect, to require, to anticipate, depending on the context.

You can use words other than espar in Spanish depending on what you are using expect to mean in English:

to count on = contar con (you expect someone to support you)
to demand = exigir (your boss expects you to do something)
to be confident about = confiar en (you expect to be done in time)
to anticipate = prever (you don't expect any more problems)

But sometimes there's not much difference between expecting, hoping, and waiting--e.g. expecting someone to show up.

Sorry I meant to say other than esperar - because I sense that means hope more than expect,

Depends on the context. The words are related. "We'll expect you at 8:00." can reasonably understood to mean that "We assume that you will be here at 8:00." without much hint of hope being involved. "We have great expectations for him.", on the other hand, can be interpreted as meaning "great hopes for him" or (for whatever reasons) "We assume that he will do great things."

At any rate, all you provided was "I expect" (a sentence fragment) The meanings of words/phrases are often determined by their context. You have provided none.

Well, if you mean in English:

Await, looking forward to, anticipate.

Hope this helps! cheese

Hi, smile

Did you have a look at this (expect on Spanishdict)? There are different meanings of it, maybe you'll find the sentence you are looking for.

Sorry I meant to say other than esperar - because I sense that means hope more than expect, but obviously I could be wrong.
