Two dots over the letter u

I have always wondered what you call the two dots over the u, in a word like Nicaraguense (sorry, I don't know how to make those two dots over the u with the computer). I know that the two dots are used over the u, to signify that the letter u is pronounced.... but what do you actually call those darn dots???

That is what it is called in German. I refer to it that way myself, even though I know it is not correct. - Jesss, Nov 25, 2010
Yes, it is of German origin, but that entry is in an English dictionary. - 0074b507, Nov 26, 2010

"Umlaut" is German... hmm... I guess it's in English too.... "Diéresis"... is Spanish - Tonyriva, Nov 25, 2010
Diéresis is the right answer. Thanks! - Jesss, Nov 25, 2010
