A washer and dryer for my wife to use, instead of going to the laundromat.

Many years ago my first job (in grade 11) was in a Seniors' Home, my first purchase was a record player!

Ah, so few of us remember what a record player is . . . ;) Welcome to fogeydom. - revmaf, Nov 26, 2010
Haha, thanks Rev, and not that I bought it outright, I gave them half and promised to come back in two weeks with the rest - my very first 'on payments' purchase. - margaretbl, Nov 26, 2010

I had been going to school for a year with no income, so I probably used the money for food and bills. And there was always something to fix on the blue volkswagon bug. It was just so great to have a job at last.alt text

It is great Sandy, I never got a chance to work during my college days. My father was against it :( - Vaanz, Nov 25, 2010
Cool Sandy, my son has a 73 beetle convertible. - Yeser007, Nov 25, 2010
Wow, that's cool, Gary! Ours got wrecked in an accident in 1982--It was my husband's car and I got hit at the light right by our house with the babies in the car. We were just shook up, & the car was no more. Now my husband wants to get a bug for a hobby. - sanlee, Nov 25, 2010

I remember perfectly... I was working on an ophthalmology clinic, doing tests to the patients who were about to get surgery.

And I bought and iPod... which my dad kept for himself.

... I remember perfectly because that was 3 years ago... jeje

I was 14 and worked weekends and after school at the donut shop a block from my house. The rule was that I had to save 1/2 of my salary...the other half was mine, but I had to buy my own clothes, meals outside the home, etc. The first thing that I bought with my own salary was a 45 rpm record.....the Bee Gees, "New York Mining Disaster of 1941". It was their first U.S. release, before disco.....

I believe it was the down payment on my first snowmobile. alt textThese are much more modern and advanced than mine ever were, I started in 1969, but I posted this photo to show Vaanz what a snowmobile is.

I bought my mother a "Rainbow cake" with my first pay check. It was the most exotic cake I had ever seen ,she loved it.

Mi guitarra Consuelo absorbe mi primer sueldo.

Every penny of 92 days ( I counted them one by one) of hard work in the cement phase of a construction site, ended up buying this handmade flamenco guitar.

My later teacher and mentor made her, I named her Consuelo..

I was 15 years old.

She is in front of me right now in my office in perfect condition and I am very proud.. red face

Vaanz,

Great question! And should I 'fess up? Yeah! Why not. I have loved the Beatles music for as long as I care to remember. And so, of course, (part) of my first pay-packet went on a Beatles record.

And, just in passing - to buy a record you actually had to...

  • Go into a (record) shop
  • Pass over some cash (credit cards unheard of circa 1972)
  • Take your record home (you probably went to the shop by train)
  • Put the record on a record-player (yes electricity was invented by that stage ...but only just... wink

I was 16 years old when I earned my first salary, working as a bell hop in an old dumpy hotel in the winter of 1962. I was living alone, in a tiny, unheated, dark room, with a bed and a one burner electric stove. The first thing I bought was one chicken, at a local supermarket. I went home, put that chicken in a pot of water, with no vegetables or seasoning, because I had no idea how to cook at the time, and I boiled it. Man, that was the best tasting chicken ever, because I hadn't had anything to eat during the previous two days. How do you like that for an answer??? I learned an important lesson during those days: life is not fair.
