To give something a boost.

To give something a boost.

I thought that 'empuje' was the word used for boost but can anyone comment on why in the following sentence 'un fuerte impulso' is better?

La Navidad ha supuesto un fuerte impulso a la economía.

It is obviously well understood because when I ran it through the translator I got exactly this:

Christmas has given a major boost to the economy.

Also why 'supuesto' and not 'dado'?

La Navidad ha dado un fuerte empuje a la economía!

Christmas has given a strong boost to the economy.

I think your first instinct, "empuje." was correct.

Word Reference lists, "Dar un empuje," as to give a boost to something.

Boost

I have heard empuje as more of a push than a boost. I suppose one thinks of a push as being horizontal motion and a boost being a vertical motion.
