Accent marks (usually called 'tilde' in Spanish) are made necessary because of the usual or ordinary way words are stressed when speaking Spanish.

The usual pronounciation rules about stress are found here at SpanishDict ----> Stress.

Tildes let the you know where to place the intonation when a stress rule is broken. The rules about this are found here at SpanishDict ----> Accents/Tildes
