matar el germen o matar al germen?

If you want to say "I killed the germ" would it be "maté el germen" or "maté al germen". I am wondering because I have heard "al germen" and I didn't know if "a" always follows the verb matar when there is a direct object, or if it was being used like a personal "a", even though germ isn't a person. For example you would say "maté al enemigo" because it's referring to a person.
The other thing I have considered is that maybe either / or is acceptable in speech. Maybe not so much in writing.

Germen does not get a personal a, unless it is your pet.
