in the making

  1. being created - Example: Her novel was ten years in the making, and not very successful.

  2. in the process of happening - Example: It became clear that this was a disaster in the making and we had no way of coping with it.

Great examples Pesta! - Nicole-B, Nov 24, 2010
In a way, I find the second option unclear. It sounds like you mean the disaster is in the process of happening, but such a thing is said prior to the disaster itself ocurring, right? On the other hand, the disaster is "in the process" of being created. - webdunce, Nov 24, 2010
I've heard the second form used. It's when the causes of an impending disaster have occurred, or are imminent or unpreventable. The actual disaster event may or may not have begun. - pesta, Nov 24, 2010
For example, during much of 2008 when sub-prime lending was running rampant, it was a disaster in the making (ultimately, the economic crash lately) - pesta, Nov 24, 2010
And I agree with Pesta. If I were watching a tsunami roll shoreward, I might say "Oh, Oh! There is destruction in the making!" - Moe, Nov 24, 2010

1 - being created - Example: Her novel was ten years in the making, and not very successful.

Su novela tuvo diez años de elaboración, sin mucho éxito

2 - in the process of happening - Example: It became clear that this was a disaster in the making and we had no way of coping with it.

Resultó claro que esto era un desastre a punto de ocurrir y no teníamos modo de evitarlo.

Medi, I figured that producción, elaboración, and desarrollo were fairly synonymous. - webdunce, Nov 24, 2010
i think that usage in some cases makes them different, even though semantically they might be considered synonyms. - mediterrunio, Nov 24, 2010

the film was three years in the making -> llevó tres años realizar la película

..y también...

a musician in the making -> un músico en ciernes

Pero, estas formas no contradice la idea de estar en producción.

Í thin that the bottomline here is ´in the making´ of what. Of course ´en producción´ can be used in some contexts. But ´estar en la producción de algo´´ is to manufactiure something - mediterrunio, Nov 24, 2010

The phrase means estar en la producción.

La frase significa estar en la producción.

I think that thread is not reliable webdunce. In that conext it would be ´en fabricación´, o ´en desarrollo´ - mediterrunio, Nov 24, 2010
