how to get the past tense for a word?

Best way is to use the dictionary at the top of the web page, press the translate button, which should give you the infinitive. You can then look at the conjugation for that verb (Click on More, then Conjugation) which will give you all the verb forms. You can then choose the preterite, imperfect or any of the perfect forms.
