A Spanish teacher suggested that the word "joven" does not need to be made plural for subjects that contain more than one person, such as nosotros, ellos, etc...Is this true? I have never seen "joven" used that way before.

Which would be correct:

Nosotros somos joven or Nosotros somos jovenes ?

Somos jóvenes

Somos joven is not correct.

But you can say "la gente joven" = young people

Yes, I think he got confused with certain subjects that are semantically plural, but are treated as singular nouns, eg: 'gente', 'población', 'multitud'.. but in that respect 'joven' isn't at all different from other adjectives. Maybe you could ask him/her to give you a concrete example.

Only when the subject is singular, as Cogumela states (la gente) would you use the singular "joven."

If there is more than one subject (los jóvenes) you would need the plural "jóvenes."
