I had to write "I like sunglasses because they are stylish." So I wrote "Me gustan los anteojos para el sol porque ______ son elegante. I didn't know what they would be because I had only learned when referring to people.

You don't need the "they" in this case. It's implied in the verb son. It would be unusual to use a pronoun here.

Me gustan las gafas de sol porque son elegantes.

Correct but I wasn't suggesting the use of ellos in his sentence I was just pointing out that ellos can be used to refer to things as well as people. - kenwilliams, Nov 19, 2010
Yes, it can. - KevinB, Nov 19, 2010

You can refer to objects as ellos as well as people and by the way they call sun glasses gafas de sol.

Don't forget when it is appropriate to use it, it's ellos or ellas, depending on the gender of the noun.

I may be wrong. But I've seen many people explain that you simply can't and shouldn't use subject pronouns for inanimate objects. No "it" or "they." The subject of a verb is implied in the ending of the verb (-o, -a, -an, etc.).

Is this correct?

Also, elegante becomes elegantes, because it describes a plural noun.

Animate/inanimate is irrelevant. It's simply a case of the pronoun being redundant (in this case). - samdie, Nov 19, 2010
