I'm Mexican... and we don't speak "Mexican"... we speak Spanish

It has differences... like the pronunciation of a few letters, words used, slang... but people from Spanish speaking countries understand each other... 23 countries...

You could say is like the difference between America, England and Australia...

Well.. we understand each other most of the time. Sometimes I have an easier time understanding American movies than Mexican or Argentinian ones (and I'm not exaggerating) :) - bill1111, Nov 19, 2010
lol... I see your point... I sometimes have it rough understanding people from some South American countries - Tonyriva, Nov 19, 2010

Hi, yes we can say that they are the same. But of course there are some differences like in English of Britain and the USA. And some kind of words may have different meanings, but basicly they are the same. smile

Creo es más importante hablar sin preocupar cómo suena.

I think it is more important to talk then to worry about how it sounds.

Spain has the Royal Academy to certify which words are accepted Spanish. Latin America has ways of expression that are common to each country.
I once said, "Platicame algo" to a friend from El Salvador and he flipped out. He said never use that word because it is ignorant. I have been noticing that it is in heavy use on Mexican TV stations. My Puerto Rican friend just laughs when he hears me talk, but he understands what I am trying to say.

Cómo se dice, "muérdame" en El Salvadorean. jeje grin

Could you explain why he finds "Platicame algo" so offensive? I'm very curious. - LiveUnsheathed, Nov 19, 2010
I have no idea. I just found platicar in 501 Spanish verbs. Go figure. - aprender100, Dec 8, 2010
