What is the difference between personas and gente?

I know that personas means "people," but apparently so does gente. If they both thanslate to the same thing in english, can they be used interchangeably?

Also, what does gentes translate to?

Thank You (:

In addition to the suggested thread, a direct translation of these two words to English works fairly well most of the time. La Gente .......... People, Las Personas ...... Persons (the exception being that "La gente" is singular only). "Personas" is used more in legal documents and "Gente" is used more in regular conversation and writen work.
