Can you help me with "rechazan dejar"?

Can you help me with "rechazan dejar"?

From a news show from TVe in Madrid:

I am not understanding how rechazan dejar is affecting without affecting the pension freeze. Is rechazan dejar "they refuse to let" or "they stopped rejecting" or what? I understand the individual meanings of the words, but not as a sentence.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Dejar sin efecto means to rescind.

They refuse to rescind the freezing of pensions.

Thanks Kevin. I was grouping 'Rechazan dejar' trying to find a meaning there. Your answer makes perfect sense. - Jack-OBrien, Nov 18, 2010
Frankly, Jack, I ran it through the translator here, and, amazingly, it worked. I'm adding that one to my flashcards. - KevinB, Nov 18, 2010

¡Hola!, Jack-OBrien:

Here are the ramblings of an uncertain interpreter:

Does this have something/anything to do with union management negotiations? Was a pension plan agreement being negotiated? Would your quote make any sense if it was interpreted as:

They refused to leave until they had effected (effected as in implemented or acted on) the pension freeze.

I've interpreted 'efecto' in the sense of causing something to occur or accomplisiing something. It's a little different than your statement "...how rechazan dejar is affecting without affecting the pension freeze" and more like "how rechazan dejar is affecting without effecting the pension freeze.

Just add a comment to this reply if it has been any help to you.

Thank you Moe. Wow, food for thought, I didn't look at it as "They refused to leave until...". Actually there was a demonstration (a 'sit in' of sorts) and they were trying to 'effect change'. - Jack-OBrien, Nov 18, 2010

Ej:

You are right, it is "They refuse to let without effect the pension freeze"

You might be confused becouse "Rechazan" is the personal pronoun of "ellos", i suppose they are the members of congress or something like that.
