apertures of the ear

I read in a short story by Nadine Gordimer: "I felt the apertures of my ears distend with concentration." Is this a kind of idiom or the result of the creative writing of the author?. If so, is "apertures of the ear" a "common" word or a rather technical one? Knowing this will help me decide what a Spanish equivalent would be for that word and phrase. Thank you!

That is a creative idiom of the author. I've never heard it before, but she is talking about the openings of the ear. You could probably translate it as an opening or "abertura".

Hope that helps!
