So I know that Aquel means that (over there/ farther away) and ese means that (closer) but is there any way to tell which to use in any of the following sentences/phrases? And if so how can you tell?

No vive en that calle.

those frutas son amargas.

that semana

those rooms

Thank you!

In practice: It's correct the use of "aquel" when something is far away or at a medium distance. But "ese" can be also use in the same way. "Aquel" can't be used when something is right next to you. When something is right next to you, you use "este".

I think the only way to tell other than putting hints in parenthesis like "way over there" etc. would be if there was prior information exchanged in the conversation,

Yes it's all relative to the speaker and the listener.
