conjugating present tense irregular verbs

There are several "somewhat irregular" verbs in the preterit tense. These are irregular in their stems, and follow the conjugation endings for -er and -ir verbs without tildes (even if it is an -ar verb). I copied and paste this from the verb section. My question is: the directions about say to conjugate in the -er and -ir endings but it seems like the yo and ud form are in the -ar form (e and I) without the tilde. Am I reading something wrong?

You used "present" in your title and "preterite" in your question. I assumed you meant preterite. - KevinB, Nov 17, 2010

-ir and -er verbs always use the same endings in the preterite tense. That paragraph is saying that all those "somewhat irregular" verbs use the same endings, whether they are -ar, -er, or -ir.
