What is wrong is verb tense concordance.
you should say Cuando escuché que Glee había cancelado, me sorprendió because you have 2 (or 3) actions taking place in the past, but one of them is even earlier (había cancelado) than the other/s.

2- había estado cancelado vs había sido cancelado. Because the original sentence is ´Glee (subject) había cancelado...´ and not ´The show (passive subject) había sido cancelado´. Había estado cancelado is incorrect in any case. - mediterrunio, Nov 17, 2010
