An encina = the holm oak tree. So, since it's in the plural and diminutive, with the -itas ending, the translation is "little holm oaks." There must be a lot of encinas in Encinitas. - Marmorin, MAY 9, 2011

Search for the word "encina", and you might find your answer. Any time a word ends in -ita or -ito, that's a diminutive form of a word (ie: "little version").
