Hello and welcome to the forum.
"Me gusta el chocolate" because "el chocolate" is considered singular.
"Me gustan los chocolates" where "los chocolates" are considered plural.
What is correct is: A mi me gusta el chocolate. Gustar is a unique verb so it is not used like any other.
Stop it, stop it!!! First of all, it is "a mí", with an accent, and it is optional. Secondly, there are over 1000 verbs like "gustar" in Spanish. I wouldn't call that "unique". Even English has a few verbs like "gustar".
A mi me gusta el chocolate.
Basically, I'm a "chocoholic" (or at the least "I like [the taste of] chocolate).
"Me gustan los chocolates" where "los chocolates" are considered plural.
This is no longer a general statement about the "flavor of chocolate" but about various kinds of "chocolate sweets".
P.S. On a simple grammatical level, me gustan el chocolate" or "me gusta los chocolates"., won't work. The subject and verb must agree.
Me gusta el chocolate. **"Gustar" Intransitive verb, gustar is construed like the English verb to please: eso me gusta that pleases me. However the verb to like is more commonly used, in which case the subject of gustar becomes the object of like, eso me gusta I like that; a María no le gustan los pasteles Mary does not like pastries.
