Live in Latin America for a few years. I guarantee that will help. Seriously though, phases differ from country to country, from region to region. What is said in one region, often times will not be understand another.

Definitely check into "refránes" (which are the equivalent of "sayings" in English). One of my personal favorites, since I live in a small Honduran town, is: "Pueblo peqeño, infierno grande", which means "Small town, big hell." Truer words were never spoken!
