Estar/Estuvo

I understand the conjugation for estar (in the preterite) so I am looking use the word "estuvo" for describing my relaxing time in the park with my dog... So what I have written is... "Yo caminé en el parque com mi perro muchas veces también. Es muy relajante para mí. ¡El verano pasado en general estuvo un gran verano!" That is what I have written but I keep getting told to use "fue" not estuvo and I need to switch this around so that "estuvo" will work.... How can I do that?

Probably just a typo, but you wrote "com mi perro", it's "con".
