Bonita can mean beautiful, but it is usually translated as pretty. Guapa, hermosa, bella, et. al. are usually translated as beautiful. If you look in our dictionary you will see that bonita has other meanings, so the answer to your question is technically, no.

beautiful synonyms

I have seen bonita used to tell little girls how pretty they look, or how pretty their new dress. Thanks for clarifying... :) - kerflop, Nov 13, 2010

I hear "hermosa" or "linda" used most often to refer to a woman's appearance. This community is mostly from Mexico, Guatemaula, Honduras, and Columbia. I hear "bonita" used to refer to clothes and physical objects.

It probably varies by culture, so be careful! LOL

Your brother probably isn't that pretty. :) - JoyceM, Nov 13, 2010
