What is "°"?

Question

I know I'll probably regret this but can anyone tell me the significance of the degree symbol ° after certain numbers I've seen here on the forum?

For example:

Congrats to Echoline, who became our 66° Student of the Week with a one-week gain of 67,038 pts.
and also: 2º ESO, Calasancio,.....

1°=primero 1?= primera 2°=segundo 2?=segunda 3°=tercero 3?=tercera, etc.

I think it changes the number like this 5º = quinto. So 2 would be segundo. Not sure if that's what it means there though.

2º ESO= segundo curso de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria 1ª,2ª, 3ª = primera,segunda ,tercera (ej: 2ª guerra mundial =second world war) 1º, 2º,3º= primero o primer ,segundo ,tercero...) Mí primer coche era de la marca Citroen( mí 1º coche...) Su segunda esposa se llamaba Raquel( =su 2ª esposa se llamaba...)

Miguel terminó la maratón de Madrid en el puesto 66.Su puesto fué el 66º.Fué el sesenta y seisavo corredor en alcanzar la meta.

Luka, -avo se usa para fracciones: 1/66. En este caso seria más complicado: 66º--->sexagésimo sexto. - mediterrunio, Nov 10, 2010
