There have been other cases of similar problems (although not as bad as this). Clearly the person who wrote the look-up software was thinking in English. The obvious solution is to always seek an item that corresponds exactly to the word as entered (including any diacritical marks). Then, if (and only if) the former search fails, consider the possibilities of there being a typo. Thus, one does not penalize the people who can (and take the trouble to) spell correctly.
To assume, as seems to have been the case here, that the "ñ" may have been a mistake for (or is equivalent to) the "n" betrays a lack of knowledge about Spanish and is insulting to the user.
