we have to in the command form

"we have to ..." (as a normal statement) is "tenemos que ..." Grammatically, an exhortation (a sort-of command to "ourselves"), simply uses the 1st person plural of the present subjunctive, thus "tengamos que ...". However this makes no sense at the semantic level. In "tenemos que ...", we aren't doing anything so how can we be ordered/commanded to do something?

Welcome to the forum. The phrase tener que + inifinitive means to have to do something. Conjugating tener in the 1st person plural indicative (we):

We have to (do something) = Tenemos que + infinitive

But that's not a command. - samdie, Nov 11, 2010
No, you're right. As you say, "We have to..." as a command doesn't make sense. - KevinB, Nov 11, 2010
