When the verb is being used reflexively the subject of the verb is both the doer and the receiver of the verbs action.

If someone other than the subject of the verb receives the action the verb is usually transitive, not reflexive.

I bush my hair. I am both the doer and receiver of the brushing action.

I brush her hair. The subject (I) is the doer, but not the receiver (she is) of the brushing action so this is a non-reflexive verb usage.

I am washing my hands. (Reflexive..me lavo las manos.)

I am washing his hands (non-reflexive - le lavo las manos.)

Learning Spanish 2.5 at this website contains a good explanation of reflexive verbs. It takes about 15 minutes to watch.

English uses much fewer reflexive verbs, there are some reflexive verbs as well as other uses for reflexive pronouns.

A reflexive verb is a transitive verb whose subject (I, you, they, we, he, she, it) and object always refer to the same person, so the object is always a reflexive pronoun.

Example:

to enjoy myself (reflexive verb)

I (subject) enjoyed myself (object) last summer

English Reflexive Pronouns:

I -> myself

You -> yourself

He -> himself

She -> herself

It -> itself

We -> ourselves

You -> yourselves

They -> themselves

Examples of reflexive verbs in English:

to enjoy myself

to hurt myself

to kill himself

to convince myself

to deny myself

to encourage myself

Another example:

to encurage ourselves

We encourage ourselves to learn spanish this week.

reflexive verbs are used when the action is being done to someone else or to oneself.

for example:

ella le casa con él (the action of getting married, or marrying, is happening to him)

ella le besa a él (the action of kissing is happening to him)

te quiero (the action of being loved is happening to you)

im sure someone can explain is much better than i can.

No, those are transitive usages, not reflexive, when the receiver of the verbs action is not also the subject of the verb. - 0074b507, Nov 10, 2010
