As a person whose life has been unalterably changed by the criminal act of another person (I refuse to use the word "victim") I can see the motivation of this man to meet his captor. Understand it, yes, but I think that it is looking for an answer that cannot be found by reason. If you pose the question to the person, "When you got up that morning, why did you think that it was OK to do what you chose to do?"
It is an unanswerable question. There is no "why" that will make it better. What are they supposed to say to you? "Sorry. I'm evil.".....or "Hey, I'm more important than you are."....or "I wasn't thinking about you at all." No matter what they come up with, it will not make any sense of it or make you feel any better.
The only way to really get past it is to accept in your own heart that there are people who will willing choose evil, or people who believe the ends justify the means and that collateral damage is worth it." You have to realize that in order to do what they've done to you that they have already found a way to dehumanize you....to make you "not matter."
It's a hard reality to accept, but it's the way of the world. The person who committed the crime against me is now sitting in Federal prison, hopefully for the rest of his life. Against all odds and incontrovertable evidence, he still denies his culpability. May God have mercy on his soul....but only if he repents.
Great link Amy, the long destructive war in Colombia has gone under-reported in the world in my opinion. The first hand experiences of the kidnap victims is profound. I enjoyed "Noticias de un Secuestro," by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It put things in perspective. I'll be looking for the video on "My Kidnapper."
