Original Text (1954 Speech by Luis Munoz Marin before the 65th Infantry Regiment):

The gallant contribution that the soldiers of the 65th and 296th Infantry Regiments soldiers and 296 regiments of infantry soldiers from the fellow citizens of the United States to defend our common ideals against those who try to subvert the liberties of the human race, makes the return of their regimental colors an occasion of deep significance for us all. His splendid record of courage and devotion has been filled with pride to the citizens of our Commonwealth and has given our people more confidence and inspiration to continue in union, strength and understanding to bring the ideals that our soldiers fought with their lives. The years of service that these regiments have been devoted to the cause of democracy have made them do units bound by a tradition that symbolizes the unfailing devotion to the ideals Puerto Ricans entering the United States citizenship and the spirit itself Puerto Rico lover of freedom. These men represent their ideals your spirit. They are a living symbol of our Associate Free State, which is one of the places on earth which can look with pride democratic peoples. Their sacrifice and devotion deserve the respect and homage of free men.

I want to take this opportunity to recall the spirit that prevailed and still prevails, when in August 1952 the flag of our Free Associated State was proudly hoisted alongside that of the United States in the battlefields of Korea. The United States flag they followed with devotion in the battle represented is its high democratic faith as citizens of the United States Flag of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico under which fought proudly represents in his heart what those ideals mean to Puerto Rico, to their homes in the hills and towns of Puerto Rico, for their pride in their traditions and their hope that their island will assume every day a most valuable role exponent of good will and comprehension between people from everywhere. Puerto Rican contributions in promoting these ideals have greatly surpassed their physical size. In the field of civil cases we have become a credit to the better understanding of the spiritual values that distinguish the United States even more than its economic strength. In the battlefield our contribution has been equally significant. Allow me to point out with pride that approximately 90 percent of Puerto Ricans who participated in the Korean conflict entered in the service as volunteers.

I want to take this occasion to mention the names of the distinguished Puerto Rican soldiers who led the 65 Infantry Regiment - Colonel Salvador T. Roig who had under his command in Europe during World War II, Colonel Cesar Cordero Davila, who ran it during the fight in Korea -. All owe a tribute to them as a symbol of the men who so bravely fought under his command as in all other occasions during those wars. Soldiers of these regiments have known how high to put the name of Puerto Rico for their courage and their devotion to the common ideals of the United States and Puerto Rico, to greet you today, I convey the message of admiration and affection of all Puerto Ricans.
