Vs recuérda de mí. Remember me VS remind yourself of me (don't forget about me) ?

Having read the various answers and comments, I repeat yet again: just because natives say it, it doesn't mean it's correct. I have heard "recuérdate de mi" often enough in the street - and it's wrong each and every time. - Gekkosan, Nov 5, 2010

Hi, Jeezz!

Recuérdate de mí does not sound good.

Acuérdate de mí, or Recuérdame are the most common ways.

Different meaning? Yes, maybe

You say "acuérdate de mí" in the sense, eh! think about me in any moment. When you say "recuérdame" as ... Don't forget me, remember me forever.

This summer I was taught the following by a native speaker:

No te olvides de mí.

Do any other native speakers agree with this? It went against what I had originally been taught, but I didn't want to disagree with a native!

How could a native disagree with so beautiful sentence? That is deep and wonderful. - cogumela, Nov 5, 2010
And correct, not like the "recuérdate de mí" by Jeezz ! :) - cogumela, Nov 5, 2010
Sorry, I got it from a song. - jeezzle, Nov 5, 2010
Excellent! Thanks for the confirmation. :) - mapletw, Nov 5, 2010
"No te olvides de mí", like Cogumela said, is a beautiful, deep sentence and totally right. - LuisaGomezBartle, Nov 5, 2010

Hola:

"Recuérdame" o "acuérdate de mí". "Recuérdate de mí" no se dice. "Don't forget about me" = "No me olvides"...

Okay, this fascinates me! Luisa & Cogumela, would you be able to give me a little more clarification? You have both said that "No te olvides de mí" is deep and beautiful/wonderful and now my curious mind wants to know why! Would you mind explaining? For example, what makes this phrasing deeper or more significant than "No me olvides" or "Recuérdame"?

These are the little nuances that I just love to learn about. smile

Thanks!

Very difficult question to answer, mapletw. It's only how it sounds. I - cogumela, Nov 7, 2010

Where are you hearing in this song "recuérdate de mí" ?

Recuérdate mujer, is what this rapper guy says. In any case, it sounds weird.

The song is curious, by the way smile

Neither do I, but it seems to me curious, that's all. :) - cogumela, Nov 5, 2010
Not what I usually listen to, but I'm not gonna hate on it because I learned a couple of words anyway. This is more my style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azfdRPeMdD8 - jeezzle, Nov 5, 2010

Jeezle,

I don't know if all natives feel the same about this, but my friend from Mexico says that "recordar" is used more like a temporary memory about less important everyday trivial things while "acordarse" is to remember something or someone (usually something with greater importance to you personally) for a longer period of time...

It would be interesting to see if anyone else here agrees.

Rena, I feel that is just on the contrary. - cogumela, Nov 5, 2010
Interesting...I wonder if I misunderstood, or it is just a personal difference. Thanks cogumela! - renaerules, Nov 5, 2010
Bah, Mexicans are always going against everyone else and saying weird things! (Just teasing - I tell the same thing to my Mexican friends!) - Gekkosan, Nov 5, 2010

One last comment on Moenia´s song: It rang a bell so I started to think it over and tune the guitar a little ... it´s a plagium from U2´s ´Running to stand still´. Unvbelievable!!! - mediterrunio, Nov 5, 2010
