Please help me understand the phrase to shop - ir de compras. Is compras the verb and if so, why is it compras and not in the infinitive like the other phrases that I am learning in my lesson? Like escuchar música and others? Please help me understand. Thanks!

Hello! The verb in "ir de compras" is "ir" and it is in it's infinitive. And it means a lot of things but simple could be translated as "go".

The rest "de compras" is simple translated like "for purchases". So translated word by word it should be like "Go for purchases".

Ir de compras conjugation:

Sg.

Voy de compras - I go shopping

Vas de compras - You go shopping

Va de compras - He/She/It goes shopping

Pl.

Vamos de compras - We..

Vais de compras - You..

Van de compras - They..

The verb is "ir" meaning "to go" - "to go shopping" is one way to think of it. It's an idiom so trying to translate it word for word doesn't convey the meaning. However, I hope a native speaker will address this question with more explanation for you!

Thank you. I have so much to learn and these verbs are a bit challenging to say the least. - joymargaret, Nov 5, 2010

Voy a ir de compras

Vas a ir de compras

Va a ir de compras

Vamos a ir de compras

Van a ir de compras

The second verb ir is in the infinitive.

This goes the same for ir de pesca.

This was adequately answered 6 years ago , you have added nothing , why open an old post when you could just as easily open one of your own. - ray76, Dec 14, 2016
