Soy consciente de que tengo treinta y seis años. I'm aware of the fact that I'm 36 years old. Ser consciente de = be aware of. I never thought of it as "be aware" like "be responsible for your actions" but I guess I never thought of it that way. It's like "Se consciente de que necesitas relajarte y cuidarte" Be aware of the fact that you need to relax and take care of yourself".

Estar consciente = be conscious and not asleep or out of it.

Edit: MacFadden is right, ser conciente also means to be Conscientious. I had forgotten that meaning.

Yes. Estar consciente means 'to be awake,' while ser consciente means 'to be responsible.'

Update: Jeezle makes a good point that ser consciente is often combined with de to mean 'to be aware of.'

responsible? - jeezzle, Nov 4, 2010
As in responsible for your actions, being fully aware of what you do. (Not like 'trustworthy' as far as I know.) - MacFadden, Nov 4, 2010
Oh yeah! Conscientious. I forgot about that meaning!. - jeezzle, Nov 4, 2010
