a freind from M. please helpexico signed a birthday card to me "te quiere" followed by his name. i thought it meant you love you but he insisted that in Mexico it meant the same as i love you or te quiero

Maybe he was referring to himself in the 3rd person?

Escribir "yo te quiero" es igual que escribir " te quiere" seguido del nombre. Escribir: "te quiere" Tomas ,es como decir te quiere la siguiente persona:Tomás.(identifica así quien es la persona que te quiere) Poner " te quiero " al final de la carta es más informal .

Here in spain means he or she loves you, quiere is third person congugation of the verb querer To want.
