If you respond to the question ¿Cómo andas? with Más o menos, gracias. Could you also say Más o menos, muy amable?

Interchangeable? No, they aren't .

Because you can't say "Tú eres muy gracias", "you are very thanks", obviously.

But they can mean the same in the appropiate context, that you' re grateful to somebody .

"Muy amable" tends to be used when somebody is kind with you. So, its appropiate use depends on if you think that asking how are you? is a gesture of kindly, or rather of politeness.

For example, "Muchas gracias" meaning a lot of thanks...so to speak (very grateful). - Jason7R, Nov 2, 2010

No. Porque "¿Cómo andas? Mas o menos, gracias" es un contexto informal, "¿Cómo andas?" es una pregunta informal y "más o menos" es una respuesta informal.

Y "muy amable" se usaría en un contexto formal.

Por ejemplo, "¿cómo se encuentra usted? bien, gracias, muy amable". o "¿cómo se encuentra su hijo? bien, gracias, muy amable"

Gracias means thank you.

My text book and the dictionary here says it can mean "Thanks very much" - foxluv, Nov 2, 2010
maybe as some kind of ellipsis... it can be inferred that someone implies ´gracias´ with the ´muy amable´ phrase. I guess that what the textbook intended to show. - mediterrunio, Nov 4, 2010
