No. In English, preterito perfecto is preterit perfect. So, that obviously means that it's not the same as the present perfect

Actually it isn't. "Pretérito perfecto" is the equivalent of the English "present perfect". The equivalent of "preterit perfect" in Spanish is called "pretérito pluscuamperfecto". And for the OP, they are mostly the same (present per and pretérito perf.) - bill1111, Nov 1, 2010
I'm more concerened about how to *use* the tense. It seems very similar to the way we use the English Present Perfect for indefinite past time, actions continuing from past to present etc. ¿Verdad? But are there any major differences? - Clives45, Nov 1, 2010
pretérito perfecto simple=preterite; préterito perfecto compuesto=present perfect; pretérito pluscuamperfecto; pretérito anterior... pretérito perfecto is ambiguous. - 0074b507, Nov 1, 2010
