Yes, it's time to tackle "those little words" that we're often not quite sure about....PREPOSITIONS But little words mean alot, and, if we all help each other, we will conquer these pesky little palabras.

Marianne has graciously agreed to to moderate these posts, keeping all of these little words straight and all of us going in the right direction.

If you're wondering exactly what words and phrases we're talking about, you can choose any from this list:

Translated: translate the preposition into English

Sentence: Write a Spanish sentence using that preposition

Translated Sentence: Write the same sentence in English

Given preposition : sobre

Translated: on, about, over

Sentence: Mi gato está sobre la mesa.

Translated sentence: My cat is on the table.

New preposition: cerca de

Given preposition: excepto

Translated: except (for)

Sentence: Me gustaría cenar contigo excepto no tengo hambre.

Translated sentence: I would like to have dinner with you except I am not hungry.

New preposition: Sin

Given preposition: a la izquierda

Translated: to the left

Sentence: Vivo a la izquierda de mi vecino.

Translated Sentence: I live to the left of my neighbor.

New preposition: al nordeste de

Translation: Against, versus

Sentence: El Barca va a jugar contra el Getafe el domingo que viene.

Sentence Translation: Barcelona is going to play against Getafe next Sunday.

Given Preposition: Frente a

Translation: In front of (?)

Sentence: Frente a las preposiciones me siento idiota, or ante las preposiciones me siento idiota

Sentence Translation: In front of prepositions, I feel like a real dunce.

Faced with (in the presence of) prepositions, I feel like a real duce.

New preposition: Contra

Translation: between, among, amongst.


Sentence: Hay un secreto profundo entre mi hermana y yo.


Sentence Translation: There is a deep secret between my sister and myself.

Meaning:

close, near (to), nearly, around

Sentence:

Estuve cerca de conseguirlo.

Translated:

I nearly got it. / I very nearly succeeded

Sentence Translation: I am far from understanding prepositions.
