Repisa VS estante and the like

I wonder if repisa has any special meaning other than shelf, I'm thinking, little shelf like something made of metal you might find on a spaceship? Or does just mean "estante" or is it more like "plataforma"? Gracias.

I have seen "repisa" used as a windowsill.
Heidita has used it for "mantel".
I have a vague memory of seeing it used in a hardware store somewhere for "brackets" or those things that a person uses to hang shelves on.
