Blog writing: formal or informal?

Blog writing: formal or informal?

I have a blog on my website where I write short articles about some of my photos in both English and Spanish. When describing the photos I often refer to the reader using "you" in English, but I'm not consistent with the form I use in Spanish as I'm not sure which I should use: tu or usted? My instinct tells me I should use usted, but when I'm writing I often think the tu form sounds better. The fact that the majority of my readers are personally known to me shouldn't affect my decision, I hope to get a wider audience wink

Are there any hard and fast rules or is it something which just comes down to preference?

Thanks in advance, Richard

It's really up to you... if you write... "¿qué opina usted?"... sounds more professional... but it sounds distant...

if you write.. "¿qué opinas?"... you sound closer to the reader, and that makes you feel a sense of confidence...

So it really depends on what you want to express... what you want your readers to feel

Thanks, this is something I do for a hobby so I think the informal approach is probably the right one. - Richard-Thomas, Oct 31, 2010
