Desde Pequeño
Is that a normal way to say 'brought up'?
eg Mi padre fue católico desde pequeño.
My father was brought up as a Catholic.
edit: sorry to be clearer, I realize the literal translation would be more like 'from childhood' but I was wondering if it can be used to include the meaning of being 'brought up'

desde sounds like a translation of since.
Here we use: de pequeño, like in this song
De pequeño yo tenía
un marcado sentimiento armamentista;
tanques de lata, de cromo y níquel
y unos graciosos reservistas de plomo,
a mano pintados, con morriones colorados
que eran toda una delicia para mi mente infantil...
Now, to answer your question, I would translate it as:
My father was brought up as a Catholic => Mi padre fue criado como católico
It means since he was little. My father was Catholic since he was little.
A child is called a "pequeño" just like they are called a "niño" Desde era niño = desde niño = desde era pequeño = desde pequeño. Since I was little, since I was a child.
Mi padre fue criado católico. My father was raised Catholic.
