The Spanish way to say 'published'

Which is more common when referring to someone having a paper published - 'visto la luz' or 'publicar'?

Visto la luz means "seen the light" and "He visto la luz" means "I've seen the light" and "He publicado un libro" means I've published a book. Where have you seen "visto la luz" to mean publish?

Seems like a figurative use, just like we say in English. Many of these works have seen the light (of day) and some are already a classic. (Weird, I would have said algunos ya son clásicos). I haven't heard it used like that before, but I would assume a figurative use, though not native myself, and keep "publicar" in your mind as the usual way of saying to publish.

I wonder what bomba translates to in that paragraph.
