Could this be translated as - "I was deeply impressed'? and if so, how does it work?

It touched the deepest strings of my soul....

it hit home

the verb is calar, which means to soak, to penetrate. Also, to cut or carve a fruit, like a melon, or even jack-o'-lanterns

Yes, Kiwi, it could.

Me encantó esa película. Alguna escena "me caló hondo".

John "me caló hondo" desde el principio, me gustó especialmente su honestidad.
