I'd say "Es un alumno excelente, y siempre obtiene las mejores notas".

Es un estudiante excelente y siempre gana las notas más altas (o las mejores notas). You may want to hold out for a native speaker though! Hope that helps!

They overlap somewhat, just like 'pupil' and 'student' would (in this case it's ok to do so). However in other cases you would only be able to say "estudiante", ie: "es estudiante de arquitectura" - bill1111, Oct 30, 2010
