"Ser" is used to classify, identify or define. Unless you want to classify that car as a parked type of car, you better use "estar", which is used for circumstances.

Great explanation, shocker I know. :) I can't say I expect anything less. - Jason7R, Oct 29, 2010
Thanks, but it is a standard explanation among qualified teachers, not my doing. - lazarus1907, Oct 29, 2010

igual que el niño crece

Either you don't read what you write or you don't understand what you have written. By this latest argument, you would prefer "estaba un niño" (because he grew up) and "Soy joven." would be incorrect because I will grow older (youth is not permanent). Perhaps, you do, indeed, say "Estoy joven." but, if you do, you mark yourself permanently as a non-speaker of Spanish.

P.S. In Spanish, one says "Son las tres." because it's permanently 3:00 in Spanish speaking countries? And, if so, how can they also say "Son las cuatro."?

P.P.S. if Catholicism were relevant (which it isn't) and your appeal is to the notion of "life everlasting", then they should, by the same reasoning, say "Es vivo." instead of "Está vivo." (though, in fact, Spanish speakers say the latter).

Welcome to the Forum Gun, in this case you could think 'is the car there permanently?' obviously not so like z said = use estar.

And what about "muerto" (dead)? Is it not a permanent thing? Well... you can't use "ser" with it. - lazarus1907, Oct 29, 2010
Nope, not at all permanent in the Catholic world Lazarus. - margaretbl, Oct 29, 2010
Right result, wron reason. - samdie, Oct 29, 2010

It depends:

El auto es aparcado cada mañana frente a mi casa por la vecina.

El auto está aparcado cada mañana frente a mi casa.

ser vs. estar

under estar, rule 2:

  1. Location The location of someone or something describes where it is permanently, temporarily, actually, or conceptually.

Bogotá está en Colombia, está muerte, era un niño-- permanence is not the ideal rule. - Stadt, Oct 29, 2010
sorry, está muerto - Stadt, Oct 29, 2010
El estado de Colombia podía cambiar a otro nombre, el muerto tendrá otra vida, igual que el niño crece - margaretbl, Oct 29, 2010
Okay, I agree you can have different view points on what is permanent and what is not - Stadt, Oct 29, 2010
However the way I view things, the way lazarus views it works better for me personally - Stadt, Oct 29, 2010
I was just giving the quick and dirty way to think but I stand corrected. - margaretbl, Oct 29, 2010
I tend to find that the more different ways of thinking about things you get exposed to, the better your final understanding- so I like to see things that challenge my way of thinking. - Stadt, Oct 29, 2010
