I'm trying to say

Some people would go swimming in the pool

I need to use either the preterite or imperfect tense of the verb IR. I'm not 100% sure which tense is better to use in this sentence. I think I should use the imperfect tense, because there is no definite beginning or ending to the action.

Algunas personas fuieron están nadando en la piscina

or

Algunas personas iban están nadando en la piscina

Thanks in advance for your help! Deb

PS - Perhaps, I should have worded it a bit differently. I'm talking about past parties. The paragraph is about a past summer party. The guist of the paragraph is things that happened (in the past) at that party. For example; At the party people ate, drank and listened to music. Then, .... a bit further along in the paragraph I want to say...We have a pool, so some people would go swimming.

Does "would go" mean "used to go" here? - culé, Oct 27, 2010

Hi Deb,

Algunas personas fuieron están nadando en la piscina

or

Algunas personas iban están nadando en la piscina

These are not correct, Neither the tense nor the usage. There is no need for "están".

You should say:

"Algunas personas irían a nadar en la piscina."

or

"Alguna gente iría a nadar en la piscina."

EDIT

Then it should be like :

"Algunas personas iban a nadar (solían ir a nadar) en la piscina."

I need to use either the preterite tense or imperfect tense (not the conditional tense). - debdelafuente, Oct 27, 2010
