If I didn't speak either I'd probably learn English first. It's become so widespread that it would be a big advantage to know it. Then I'd learn either Spanish or Mandarin, depending on what I was going to be doing.

If you're asking which is easier to learn, I'd say Spanish. As a native English speaker, I find English very weird and difficult. Spanish is very regular. There are are only an extremely small number of truly irregular verbs. Spelling is perfectly regular, as is pronunciation. The only somewhat difficult things are the subjunctive conjugations, and ser vs. estar.

If I could get past those "somewhat difficult things" I might agree with you.:) - Yeser007, Oct 26, 2010
If it were easy everyone could do it. :-) - KevinB, Oct 26, 2010
I absolutely agree! I know I wouldn't enjoy one bit learning English and all its inconsistancies if I wasn't a native speaker. On the other hand, I love Spanish though because of its consistancy, and beauty of course. :) - lchsnicolita, Oct 26, 2010

Welcome to the forum Scurlock. My guess is that you are asking which is easier to learn to which I would answer English, only because it is my native language. However a native Spanish speaker will most likely tell you different. I personally feel it depends on what you were brought up with as both languages have their quirky little differences. Maybe someone who is a native Asian learning both would be better at comparing the two.

I agree with Kevin in most respects. English is by far the best option no matter how you look at it, but when it comes to difficulty, while both are relatively easy languages compared to others, both have easy and hard points for learners. One of the problems with Spanish is that -unlike with English- most tutorials are full of rubbish that doesn't work, and this makes things unnecessarily hard.

You find English easy? I'm impressed, but you usually do impress me. I never really understood English grammar until I started studying Spanish. I think a Germanic language with a Latin grammar is odd to start with. - KevinB, Oct 27, 2010

If you are talking which is advantageous, both are extremely widespread. Spanish and English are dominant languages in over twenty countries Given English's pouplarity as a lingua franca( , it is even more. But as yesero says it depends on which language you were brought with up, because every has pelicularities and difficulties for people who speak other languages.
