What was edited? I removed the double quote marks around the word 'ticker' to make the question more compatible with MS Explorer. - Moe, Oct 25, 2010

alt text Vsayda:

The word ticker is taken from the sound of a clock, watch or printer. Old fashioned clocks were said to make the noise "tick"/"tock". Old style wind-up wrist watches, from the time before battery operated watches, were said to make the sound tick, tick, tick. Before bubble jet and laser printers, typewriters, pin printers and stock market tape style printers all made a rythmic ticking sound as they printed onto paper. From this arose the idea of these clocks, watches and printers being tickers. The old fashioned telex and stock market reporting printed tapes were all referred to as tickers because of their rythmic and continuous ticking noises.

An interesting successor to this is that a human heart, in English, is sometimes referred to as your ticker because of its rythmic thump thump, thump thump, thump thump ongoing sound when heard through a stethescope or with your ear next to the chest of your child or your lover.

Then, to use ticker in a sentence, an English speaker might say:

I went to see the Doctor today and after he listened to my chest, he said the old ticker is doing just fine.

The stock market is in total confusion today and since no-one knows whether it's going up or down, the ticker tape is going crazy with activity.

My car is getting so old that the motor sounds like its ticker is giving out.

These are a few examples of the possible use of the word ticker in complete sentences. There are probably other uses so please do not consider this to be a complete list.

As you will have seen here, ticker is a word that is used in a very colloquial way. To tell the truth, I couldn't think of a use that is not colloquial or idiomatic. I hope this has been some help.

Slang: The old man has a bad ticker (heart). El viejo tiene mal el corazón.

Ticker tape: Before computers, the New York stock exchange would use a paper tape that would run all day with quotes of all the stock prices.

Antes del uso de las computadoras, la bolsa de valores en Nueva York solía usar una cinta de papel que corría todo el día con las cotizaciones de todas las acciones.
