How do you say "monitoring" in Spanish?

Question

The context: The doctor told the patient that he needs to stay overnight in the hospital so that the personnel can "monitor" his vitals. I have heard "monitorear" but I have my doubts. Does anybody have a better translation? or is the term "monitorear" proper Spanish? The dictionary here doesn't give a verb example.Thans for your help.

According to rae.es, "monitorizar" should work.

"Monitorear" is spanglish.

"Mantener en observación" and "monitorizar" are both good choices.

Monitorear is not the best choice, although it´s widely used,

I prefer supervisar or controlar

If I use "supervisar" to translate the sentence under the context it would make perfect sense, but how would I use " controlar" to make the translation flow in Spanish? - Myneg, Oct 25, 2010

I'm on medical school... we say "monitorear", "checar", "mantenerlo en observación"

I'm curious. In what part of the country do you use the term like that? I guess I'm trying to find out if monitorear is understood say in Latin America or in Spain. - Myneg, Oct 25, 2010
