Que demonios ha sido eso
What the heck has been that? I know it means to say, what the heck was that? Or something to that effect, but I'm not seeing it. What the heck has that been? I don't get it. Gracias.

We could say: caramba, ¿qué ha sido eso? (with surprise).
"Ha sido eso" is better than "fue" because it is probable that the action to be when we are talking.
We say " What the hell was that!" "What the hell has been that" isn't said.
What in hell has been that? = ¿qué demonios ha sido eso?
It is as if you say: maldita sea, ¿qué ha sido eso?
So "¿Qué fue eso?" is pretty much the same as "¿qué ha sido eso?" and ¿Qué demonios fue eso?" is like "¿Qué demonios ha sido eso?". In this sense, although it doesn't translate spot on, fue is like ha sido. Right? Gracias.
