Very intesting question! maybe it´s related to Don Quixote, los duelos con pan son menos, meaning you can undergo your problems easier if you don´t have at least to face them with an empty stomach.
Now, duelo de pan it´s maybe a contest or challenge in which you have to do something with bread. When I was a child you could start throwing little balls of bread to someone, and then a war may would take place, for instance in a family meeting, but playing with food (not to mention throwing it) is seen as an offensive behaviour by most people, espcially by those elders who had to suffer famine in war & extreme poverty periods of their life.
Now, I don´t know if any of this has to do with El espinazo del diablo.
